“Do the work. Everyone wants to be successful, but nobody wants to do the work.”Gary Vaynerchuk, CEO of VaynerX
After realising that I had failed to enter the stream I wanted, I worked extra hard the following year. At the start of that year, I have set the tone right by telling myself to put extra effort into studying. I had a clear goal which is to enter the express stream. I committed my time to realise that goal for that year.
At the beginning of the year, I started slow. I was still settling down to the new environment, my new school. After getting used to it, I realised something different about me that particular year.
I became more attentive and quiet.
I started paying attention to classes and tried to do my best on every test. I remembered I had a science test after recess. Instead of eating, I took my notes and revised for the test.
I even bought practice paper to work on my mathematics. After school, I would open up this practice paper and start to attempt the problems. Questions after questions, it seemed fun to me to be able to solve the maths problems. I enjoyed studying. It made me feel a sense of accomplishment.
I love Mathematics and Science because it allows me to solve the problem. However, to me, English and Malay language are different. I didn’t put much effort into my languages.
I realised that I had spent such a large amount of my time studying the subjects I love. The lessons I have learned from school, I practised/applied at home by doing practice papers.
I continued doing this throughout my first year in secondary school.
Guess what? At the end of the year, I had gotten my results. It reflected that I did exceptionally well.
At that time, I had the choice of transferring to the express stream or remained in the stream I’m in. I thought very hard about this. I had to choose between my friends or study. In the end, I transferred to a better stream. I think my friends would always be my friends regardless of which stream I’m in. But for that opportunity to enter the stream that I wanted was a one-time thing for me. Plus, I always wanted to the express stream.
Looking back, I think that how much effort you put into something matters. It will start to produce the outcome we want. If the amount of work is low, the output wouldn’t be that great. However, if we were to do our best, the outcome may turn out to be the best too.
After a while, I realised that effort only isn’t enough. We may put a lot of effort into something. However, it may turn out sour. For this, I would say, hard work and the correct strategy would guarantee the best outcome.
Let’s take a step back and look into our lives.
Are we putting more effort into our life? Are we spending more time learning and improving that particular thing? It can be a relationship, our health, money, etc. Is there any event that it seems like we put in so much effort only to realise that we have failed? If there is, are we executing the correct steps to make sure that it would work?
You would know the answer the best.
I’d love to hear from YOU. In what areas of life have you not been putting in the effort? How would you like to improve on that? Please leave a comment below and share your insights with me.
